Le Cesine è una delle più pregevoli aree umide della costa adriatica. Collocata nel Salento in Puglia, è stata riconosciuta nel 1971 Zona Umida di interesse Internazionale e, nel 1980, Riserva Naturale di Stato; la gestione dell’intero parco naturale è stato affidato al WWF Italia.
La zona di maggior pregio naturalistico ed ambientale occupa il settore orientale, dove sono presenti le paludi d’acqua dolce e salmastra ed i principali habitat di interesse comunitario. I caratteri idrogeologici risultano molto complessi, infatti si ritiene che lungo la costa trovino efflusso tre acquiferi sovrapposti, le cui acque hanno caratteristiche chimico-fisiche molto diverse.
Al tributo sorgivo di acque sotterranee si deve in prevalenza il delicato equilibrio idrologico ed ecologico che rende di speciale interesse l’area umida delle Cesine, grazie ai quali l’ambiente si presta alla presenza di specie animali e vegetali di pregio.
In tale contesto, il Gruppo di Idrogeologia sta operando per l’affinamento delle conoscenze idrogeologiche, l’accurata definizione del modello idrogeologico concettuale e, più in generale, per contribuire alla tutela e alla salvaguardia di questa preziosa risorsa ambientale.
Cesine is one of the most valuable wetlands of the Adriatic coast. It is located in the Salento Penisula, in Apulia Region; it was recognized in 1971 Wetland of International Interest and, in 1980, State Natural Reserve; the managing of the whole nature park was entrusted to WWF Italy.
The most natural and environmental value area occupies the eastern sector, where freshwater and brackish marshes and the main habitats of community interest can be observed. The hydrogeological setting is very complex, in fact, it is believed that along the coast find outflow three overlapping aquifers, whose waters have different chemical and physical characteristics.
The tribute and constant source of groundwater must mainly the delicate balance hydrological and ecological making of special interest Cesine wetland, thanks to which the environment is suitable for the presence of valuable animal and plant species.
In this context, the Hydrogeology Group is working on the refinement of the hydrogeological knowledge, the careful definition of the hydrogeological conceptual model and, more generally, to contribute to the protection and preservation of this valuable environmental resources.

Il 25 ottobre si è tenuta la giornata di studio e divulgazione scientifica “Lo studio e la tutela delle acque sotterranee”, svoltasi presso il Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra e Geoambientali dell’Università di Bari.
I relatori, docenti, ricercatori, e dirigenti tecnici di primarie istituzioni nazionali, hanno sotteso un interessante e stimolante quadro di conoscenze, che ha spaziato dalle modificazioni climatiche in atto, agli effetti sulle principali risorse idriche sotterranee dell’Italia meridionale e di interesse regionale, con approfondimenti in merito agli aspetti di ottimizzazione dell’utilizzo per il soddisfacimento della domanda potabile e agricola. Ai lavori hanno partecipato con assiduità i circa 130 iscritti (le iscrizioni sono state chiuse in anticipo per esaurimento dei posti disponibili).
La Relazione ad invito della Prof. Kristine Walrevans dell’Università di Gent, premiata durante l’evento per i brillanti risultati conseguiti, ha collocato i lavori in un quadro di conoscenze ampio, offrendo una visione internazionale delle pratiche scientifiche inerenti, in particolare, gli acquiferi costieri e l’intrusione marina.
L’evento è stato fortemente voluto dall’AIGA (Associazione Italiana di Geologia Applicata e Ambientale) che lo ha organizzato con l’IRPI (Istituto di Ricerca per la Protezione Idrogeologica del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche), con il patrocinio e il supporto organizzativo del Italian Chapter della IAH (Sezione Italiana della Associazione Internazionale degli Idrogeologi), dell’Ordine dei Geologi della Puglia e dell’Ordine degli Ingegneri della Provincia di Bari.
Globally, invisible groundwater resources are under increasing pressure due to human activities and climate change. Our response to this pressure is often not adequate, also due to limited awareness of the importance of groundwater resources. This Groundwater Overview is prepared to showcase the essentials and the credentials of groundwater, placed within the broad spectrum of UN-Water Member’s and Partner’s activities. It is meant to inform about groundwater-related activities, to enhance knowledge exchange and collaboration, and to raise awareness about our most important hidden resource: groundwater.

Dal 25 al 29 settembre si svolto a Dubrovnik, il 44th Annual Congress of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) “Groundwater Heritage and Sustainability”, al quale il Gruppo di Idrogeologia ha partecipato alla sessione “Management of groundwater resources of coastal aquifers” con un lavoro dal titolo “A comprehensive approach to the knowledge of the coastal carbonate aquifers of Adriatic and Ionian Seas“, presentato con una relazione orale da Maurizio Polemio.
La penuria idrica in Puglia sin da epoca storica, ha fortemente condizionato la vita umana e gli insediamenti soprattutto lontano dalla costa. Se lo sviluppo possente degli acquedotti ha progressivamente soddisfatto, a partire dall’inizio del secolo scorso, la domanda idrica potabile, molto resta da fare per chiudere il bilancio idrico regionale in modo che risultino soddisfatte le esigenze produttive, in specie quelle agricole e la sostenibilità dei prelievi. Nel corso del tempo, soprattutto a causa delle modificazioni climatiche, osservate in particolare dal 1980 in poi in tutta l’Italia meridionale , si è registrato un importante calo della ricarica che, posto in relazione al crescente utilizzo delle risorse, ha determinato condizioni di sovrasfruttamento. Uno degli effetti più rilevanti è stato l’incremento della salinità delle acque sotterranee pugliesi, un fenomeno ad oggi, ben conosciuto. Nonostante le conoscenze scientifiche acquisite, i criteri di gestione applicati non hanno impedito una progressiva degradazione qualitativa. Alla luce di queste premesse, il presente contributo analizza le più recenti modificazioni climatiche in termini di piovosità e temperatura atmosferica, discusse sulla base delle misure acquisite negli ultimi 95 anni, delle variazioni tendenziali della disponibilità di risorse idriche sotterranee e di come queste potrebbero essere migliorate grazie alla ricarica controllata degli acquiferi.
The temperature and rainfall database of Southern Italy has been realized starting from the need to organize and make usable the hydrological data collected by the Hydrogeology Group from decades to be used for scientific purposes in order to pursue many activities and research projects on issues related to climate change, natural hazards and the protection of water resources.
The collected data concerns time series relating to rainfall, atmospheric temperature, piezometric levels, spring flow yield and, secondly river flow yield.
The geographical area concerned some southern Italy regions with the exception of the island and Molise regions. In particular including Puglia, Campania, Basilicata and Calabria. For each of these regions, almost all the measuring stations located in the area managed by main institutions were considered.
