Description The Zelkova genus, a typical element of European forest flora in the preglacial period, has definitively become extinct throughout continental Europe following the Quaternary glaciations. Recently in Sicily (1991) a population of a new species for science has been discovered, described with the name of Zelkova sicula. This population, which is the only one so far known, is represented by about 200 individuals spread over an extremely small area and subjected to a strong anthropic pressure. According to the studies conducted so far, the current ecological context in which this relict population is moving away from a state of bioclimatic optimum, which makes the survival of the species critical. Considering the exceptional scientific and biogeographical value of Zelkova sicula, the particular state of relicity in which it currently finds itself and the delicate balance that characterizes its current natural habitat, specific measures of protection are absolutely necessary to ensure its survival and improve the prospects for conservation of the species. With this project the CNR, Legambiente and the Ministry of the Environment propose to start the recovery and conservation of Zelkova sicula. The activity of the CNR is developed in four well-defined phases: 1) census of the current population of Z. sicula; 2) Study of intraspecific variability through DNA analysis (SSR molecular markers); 3) Production of propagation material (cuttings authorized by genetically different plants); 4) Ex-situ conservation at the CNR experimental field present in Sicily.
